The description: Chatham University has an immediate opening for the Head Gardener in the University’s Facilities Department.

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities Management, the Head Gardener will coordinate, direct and participate in the activities of the field team by performing routine and recurring maintenance of the campus grounds to include all lawns, shrubs, trees , sidewalks and roads, signs, and parking areas. The position is also responsible for coordinating, directing and assisting in removing snow and ice from the roads, boardwalks and steps on campus at all hours of the day and night. All work is subject to inspection for conformance to accepted trade specifications and standards, but is primarily examined through observation results. Because this department intertwines with other departments, this position must frequently plan, cooperate and contribute to the institution by sharing and working with peers

Main tasks and responsibilities:

• Under the direction of the Director, coordinate and lead the day-to-day operations of the landscaping team to include assignment, direction and coordination of tasks, taking into account their time, attendance and schedules. work, and directing the efforts of the department in an efficient and professional manner

• Keep accurate records of chemical use and maintenance work performed, including mowing, seeding, fertilization, aeration, use of pesticides and herbicides

• Coordinate, direct and participate in the maintenance of the athletics field; ad hoc repair of roads, walkways and steps; maintain ground equipment; snow and ice removal; maintain surface drainage

• Inventory and requests

• Ground crew training


• Must have at least an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management or related field

• Must have a minimum of four years of experience as a landscaping, gardening and snow removal supervisor.

• Must have valid Pennsylvania certification in pesticide and herbicide application.

• Must have a Pennsylvania driver’s license

Physical requirements:

• Grounds maintenance work can be physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds for many reps)

• Must be able to work outdoors in all climates

• Must have the manual coordination required to operate the equipment
