Q: Is there a good gardening calendar that I can download to remind me of monthly gardening tasks?
A: Glad you asked! The UT-TSU extension has just released its 2022 schedule. It can be found at: https://extension.tennessee.edu/publications/Documents/W436.pdf. This calendar was developed to help gardeners in Tennessee be successful.
Here are some other great things to do this month to make your garden a success this year:
⢠Remove those pruners from the wall and see if they need some attention. Lubricate the pivot with somelight oil and sharpen it. Here’s a great YouTube video on sharpening pruning shears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vvBkPQZzOU. The sharp garden tools are so much better to use than the blunt ones and you will notice the difference! Pruning tree branches will be so much easier and the pruned area will heal much faster for plant or tree improvement. And your shoulders won’t be so sore from the effort.
Your garden hoes and shovels could also be sharpened. You’ll also notice the difference when you start digging in our famous Northeast Tennessee red clay or digging small roots. Here’s another great YouTube video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3mrlMfTZos
⢠Go online or extract the seed catalogs you got last fall and start planning your spring plantings. Remember the saying from last summer: âGood preparation prevents poor performance. “
⢠Speaking of planning, it is always helpful to have a diagram of your garden plot. Now is a good time to sketch your garden and even plan where you want to place your flowers or vegetables for the year. A good start is this handy guide to planning your vegetable garden from the University of Illinois Extension website: https://web.extension.illinois.edu/vegguide/step02.cfm.
If you have the resolve to finally get your garden or flower garden in order, UT-TSU Extension also offers a printable guide to landscaping design to get you started. Check it out here: https://extension.tennessee.edu/publications/Documents/W869.pdf.
The above should keep the garden busy until January for year round success!

The Master Gardener program is offered by the University of Tennessee Extension. The objective of the Master Gardener program is to train volunteers trained in horticulture. These volunteers work in partnership with the local extension office in their counties to expand educational awareness, providing home gardeners with research-based information.
